Welcome Little Wonder: The Divine

I cannot reflect on Moriah's birth without declaring God's goodness and kindness to our family. It compels me to say...

God is our help and strength. He gives abundantly more than we ask or imagine. The prayers of His people are powerful and effective. He is truly with us, holding us, caring for us, and working out His perfect timing. The Glory is His, the Story is His, and I am forever grateful that our lives are His forevermore.

Here are some of the prayers we and so many others prayed along the way that He answered so graciously:

-Let us one day laugh at how much easier it was to deliver a child in North Africa than in America...believe me this prayer took a lot of faith and was even prayed without full confidence.

-Please work the timing out so Felicity can be cared for, Cheryl and Dan are in town, Dan gets to be there for as much of the birth as possible...with a small social network here, and all of them out of town for Moriah's due date, this was a huge request.

-Getting an epidural, blood transfusion or c-section frankly terrifies me in this foreign place, please keep us from all of these, Lord

-Please let her delivery be short, let us stay at home for most of it, and let us get home as soon as possible following her birth

-Give Cheryl and our doctor wisdom

- We pray for a healthy baby girl and mommy

We called, and He answered. We are still in awe and completely overwhelmed at His kindness to our family and the kindness of our friends and family that joined us through prayer though they were so far away.

God met me through prayer in another way during labor. Just the night before, we had listened to a message and the speaker said something like, "we are most miserable when we focus on ourselves." This word came to me early in labor, and I decided to pray for friends and family through contractions. In between, I picked who I would pray for in the next contraction. It gave me focus and really helped me get through the first 4 hours of labor. It was something I did not plan. In moments of pain, in this big life moment for our family, I was able to walk with so many of you who have faithfully held us up along the way. It was a gift.

We moved to this new part of our country at the very beginning of my pregnancy. I would say this season has been a greater struggle for me than when we initially moved to North Africa. There were times I cried and cried, afraid that I hated this place and couldn't bear to live here because of how sick I felt. I battled the god of comfort and realized its ugly place in my life. I had moments of fear for my own health and that of our little girl's. All the while, I never questioned if we should deliver in this place. In hindsight it's as if God sheltered me from all of the crazy places my mind could have gone or the depths of fear my heart could have felt. He carried me along giving the grace I needed each day. He carried me even until the very end.

In the very last pushing moments of her birth, I had an image of Him holding me. For a moment things seemed to standstill, and I felt as if I was looking on at the whole thing in slow motion. I was being held.

I'm not the kind of person who this sort of thing happens to regularly. I struggle to see beyond the concrete and the here and now. This moment was one of the most affirming in my faith journey to this point. I marvel at His presence, and I give thanks that He allowed me to feel it and know it so well at such a time. It is my prayer that this piece of our story, Moriah's birth, will continue to encourage us and deepen our trust as we follow the One who so graciously provides all we need through His presence alone.

For all of these things we give YOU thanks, God. Help us to walk on in light of what you have done and in complete trust in what you are are yet to do.

Rescue

Last month I had the opportunity to attend an event called ReScUe hosted by one of the most compassionate people I have ever met, and someone I'm honored to know.

Going in, I knew the night was going to be HeAvY, and that was an understatement for sure. The subject at hand was HuMaN TrAfFickInG. AKA: Slavery in the 21st Century, the ExPloItaTiOn of men, women, and children for labor and/or sex.

I wish I could fully share the night's experience with you. The speakers, dramas, video clips, images, etc. were heart breaking, startling, and quite overwhelming. My heart was stirred.

Here's only a bit of what I didn't know:
    • 27 millions people are in some form of sLaVeRy right now.
    • 50% of these people are ChIldReN and 80% are female.
    • Nearly 18,000 victims are trafficked into the U.S. each year (50/day).
    • The average age of entry into the commercial sex industry is 12 years old.
    • U.S. citizens account for 25% of SeX ToUriStS worldwide.
This issue is not something that just happens OvEr ThErE. It is close to home, in our very own country, and I didn't know ...but now I do, and I can't ignore it.

So what do I do?...

I tell you. I pray. I penetrate darkness with the light of TrUtH. I hope. I give. I speak. I love. I pray some more. I ask. I cry. I remember and not forget. I advocate. I trust in the One who is greater than all these things. I fight. I don't listen to the voice in my head that says this issue is too big. I educate myself. I move.

What does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. Micah 6:8

If you are interested in speaking for those who do not have a voice, loving those who can do nothing for you in return, penetrating darkness, making a difference and joining the fight, please visit the International Justice Mission site, and let your voice be heard. It will take one minute of your time, but it could help spare many little ones a life of pain, exploitation, and utter darkness. Your voice matters. Let it be heard.

Anticipation...

The first year we were married Dan and I didn't have much money so we made it a tradition to buy one Christmas decoration for our home each year. We picked this Advent Calendar up at a market in Cambodia two years ago, and already it is becoming one of our most TrEaSuReD yule tide traditions.

With our schedules quickly FiLliNg, the temperature rapidly DrOpPiNg, and the sun RaReLy shining, I find the days of Advent are ones that I'd rather curl up on my couch with a good book, burning fire, and a cup of FrU-FrOo coffee instead of heading into work.

It is on such days that I find great JoY in something so seemingly SiMpLe. I love how the small act of moving just one nativity piece a day, be it a sheep, a shepherd, or a king stirs up great HoPe and AnTicIpaTioN in my heart...

The KiNg is coming, and as we remember his HuMbLe entry into Earth so many years ago, it reminds me on those "I wish it was a SnOw DaY" days that he is coming again soon.

So tomorrow morning as we stand before our calendar placing the lone sheep on the scene, I eagerly expect that He will stir my HeArT and give me the StrEnGth to walk out the door and face my WorLd with his LoVe, the love of the coming KiNg.

Good Friday

Contemplating the death of my Savior...

Wordle: Christ's Death

*Click on the image to enlarge it.

I did a topical search at Bible Gateway for verses with the words Jesus and death in them. I pasted them in at wordle, and this was the result. I love this tool because it highlights the most frequently used words in a text. I think it is BeAutiFuL to see that in the scriptures that contain Jesus' name and death, the word that occurs most frequently beyond these two is LIFE. As I contemplate my SiN and DaRknEsS that brought about my Savior's death, I am grateful for the HoPe of LiFe that triumphs over the darknEss and sIn.

Though the SoRroW may last for the night, His JoY comes in the morning...

The Present

Some truths that have been staring me in the face this week:

Life on Earth is short.

Life is unpredictable.

I count it a privilege to share in others' stories. My job allows me to share in so many, and my community at Bloomingdale Church affords even more opportunities. I hear bits and pieces of stories from the lives of family and college and high school friends through facebook, phone conversations, blogs, emails, etc. Stories are all around me...

Some heartbreaking quotes from this week include:

"S won't be at school tomorrow. Her step-brother committed suicide over the weekend"
~Our School Social Worker

"I just got called down to sign my pink slip."
~ Friends and Co-workers who lost their jobs this week

"I feel guilty that my parents spend so much money on karate for me. I'm terrified of foreclosure."
~Journal Entry from a Fifth Grade Student

"My lunch mom's husband died last night"
~Colleague and Friend

"The cancer spread to my lungs. Chemo starts tomorrow."
~ Women's Bible Study

I could go on, but I'll stop there. I think you get the idea.

I mention pieces of these stories not to depress you or stir up fear . I mention them because I am being changed by them. These are stories from everyday people. People like me, and most likely, people like you. They remind me of my frailty and lack of control in life. They scream REALITY to one who thinks she (me) is in control and pretends to have a PLAN. They teach me to be content and grateful. They teach me to be generous with time. They teach me to take myself less seriously. They teach me to take myself more seriously. They teach me to care deeply, to weep, and mourn. They teach me to LOVE...

My heart is overwhelmed. As I write this, I wonder if there is any way I can possibly express the awakening happening inside of me. I am moved.

Not knowing what lies ahead in this world gives me a FREEDOM in the PRESENT. Thoughts and worries that so often fill my mind vanish when I consider my lack of control. Instead I am filled with the desire to make the most of each moment...to be fully PRESENT.

I am one who has dwelt upon the past on a regular basis. Sometimes I dwell on the past because hurtful things myself or others have done continue to mess with my heart today. Other times I want to go back because I was so much happier, prettier, skinnier, more peaceful, confident, fun...back then.

I've also been one to dwell on the future i.e. what will we do with our lives, when can we have kids, will we have enough, will we get to do this or that...? What if something happens to _____, _______, _______, or _______?

I foolishly dwell on these things. All the while, I miss out on fully experiencing the PRESENT...the time that, ironically, was once my FUTURE and will soon become my PAST.

I cannot know what my life on Earth has in store for tomorrow, the next day, or any day after that for that matter. The stories I have heard from this week alone give me no choice to deny this fact. All I know is what my life on Earth holds at this moment so I pray that this recent movement in my heart and mind will continue to change me and that I will be given humility and strength to love deeply in all things big and small....to love deeply NoW because I do not know what quotes my story will hold tomorrow.
Whatever may come to pass, it is my HoPe that this quote will AlwayS be the central theme of my story:

Above all, LoVe each other DeePly...there is no FeAr in LoVe.
~ The Author of EvErY story
